Dear UN-SPIDER Colleagues,
I would first like to extend a big thank-you to everyone who is
contributing to the successful implementation of the UN-SPIDER Programme.
There are several deadlines and opportunities coming up and I wanted to
personally make you aware of them:
1. The first deadline is to send in your Application Form for the upcoming
"United Nations International UN-SPIDER Workshop: Building Capacities to
Reduce Disasters" to take place in Vienna, from 2-4 June, 2009. The
Information Note with the Application Form can be downloaded from our
website. The Application Form has to be received by 30 April 2009,
particularly if you are requesting funding support to attend the workshop.
This international workshop will provide a unique opportunity for all those
interested in getting involved in bridging gap between the disaster
management and space technology communities. capacity building, the impact
of climate change and the needs of small island developing states.

2. The second deadline is for the submission of abstracts for the upcoming
"Third Central Asia GIS Conference, GISCA’09". This conference will take
place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from 27-28 August, 2009. Hosted by the Kyrgyz
State University for Construction, Transportation & Architecture and
supported by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA);
the conference will bring together practitioners from Central Asian
countries. Topics to be discussed include GIS for Environmental
Management, Emergency Management, and Health; New Trends and Technologies
in GIS&T; Spatial Data Infrastructures; and Educational Programmes.
UN-SPIDER will be organising a pre-conference meeting on 26 August 2009 and
will be providing funding support for experts from the disaster management
community to attend this meeting as well as the conference. The deadline
for submission of abstracts is 1 May 2009. Further information can be
obtained from the Conference website:
http://www.aca-giscience.org/gisca09 as well as by e-mail:

3. The third deadline is for the submission of abstracts for the upcoming
"AfricaGIS 2009" International Conference. AFRICAGIS is one of the leading
geospatial conferences in Africa and provides a platform where
geo-information professionals from Africa and around the world come
together to learn and interact about geo-information technology and its
applications. UNOOSA is supporting this Conference and will be
co-organising a special session on space-based information for risk and
disaster management. Funding will be available for travel support for
selected participants that have their paper accepted to be presented in
this special session. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 30 April
2009. Further information can be obtained from the following websites:

4. SpaceAID - I would like to share with you a short paper I wrote for the
last issue of GIM International, which I am attaching to this email. It
focuses on the main mandate of UN-SPIDER which is to ensure universal
access and use of space-based information to support risk and disaster
management and emergency response. Within UN-SPIDER we are setting up the
SpaceAID framework which will make sure all existing opportunities are
available to all countries and regional and international organisations to
support emergency response activities. We will be defining SpaceAID during
the Third United Nations International UN-SPIDER Bonn Workshop to be held
in Bonn, Germany from 21 - 23 October 2009. We are inviting all relevant
partners to join in the discussion and implementation of the SpaceAID
framework. If you would like to contribute to the establishment of the
SpaceAID framework please send us an email (un-spider at unoosa.org).
Thanks again for your support. We invite you to check our website regularly
for news and updates.
Regards
David
