Dear Colleagues,

For those that will be attending next week in Geneva the Second Session of
the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction we would like to invite you
to attend the planned side event on "Accessing space-based information to
support disaster risk reduction" which will take place on Tuesday 16 June
2009, 13:30 – 15:00 PM in Room 15.

This is a joint effort of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs
(UNOOSA), through its UN-SPIDER programme, the Secretariat of the Group on
Earth Observation (GEO), the Asian Disaster Reduction Centre (ADRC), and
the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
(ESCAP) and which will contribute to promoting synergies aimed at enhancing
the use of space-based information for disaster risk reduction.

I am attaching the information on the event with the planned presentations.
We will launch during the event the "SPIDER Global Thematic Partnership"
and the ESCAP Regional Platform (Asia and Pacific Region). Both initiatives
will contribute to ensuring that we have aforum where we can focus on the
access and use of space-based tools and information to support disaster
risk management.

I do hope you can join us. Juan Carlos Villagran and myself will be in
Geneva for the duration of the meeting and we would welcome touching base
with all our partners. UN-SPIDER is also setting up an exhibition booth on
"Space-based information and services for Disaster Risk Reduction" where
you can come discuss with us your needs and learn of opportunities you can
build upon. As the United Agency mandated to provide this support we
welcome the opportunity of meeting and working with you, whether you are a
provider of solutions or an end user with specific needs.

Please do send Juan Carlos and myself an email letting us know if you will
be joining us and also so that we can make sure we find time to touch base
and discuss opportunities.

I am also attaching the UN-SPIDER May Updates.y. The hyperlinks in the
version we sent out yesterday did not work so we have recreated the pdf
file making sure this time the hyperlinks work. The May Updates can also be
accessed through our webiste: http://www.unspider.org.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Geneva next week.

Regards

David
