UN-SPIDER is supporting SGAC (Space Generation Advisory Council) in its
initiative to involve youth leaders in building an understanding on how
space technology can help the Caribbean region tackle disasters. Please
find below the announcement of a regional competition that will identify a
young leader that will bring its winning poster to the fourth Caribbean
Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM). The theme for this
year's CDM Conference “Strengthening CDM through Youth and Community
Empowerment” is meant to promote public outreach and greater awareness to
disaster management amongst communities and youth to allow them to build
resilience to hazard.

SGAC calls for youth leaders to chart how space technology can help the
Caribbean tackle disasters

4 November 2009, Vienna: For Immediate Release

One young leader will win the chance to attend the fourth Caribbean
Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) this year on the
theme “Strengthening CDM through Youth and Community Empowerment” at the
Rose Hall Resort and Spa, Montego Bay, Jamaica on December 7–11, 2009. The
competition launched by Space Generation Advisory Council in support of the
UN Programme for Space Applications (SGAC), calls for candidates between
the ages of 18–35 to submit a poster on the topic of "Case Study on the use
of Space–based information for Disaster Management in the Caribbean". The
lucky winner would get to contribute to this must–attend conference for all
disaster management stakeholders, young people and community workers, which
provides the platform for reflection and dialogue on initiatives and issues
to advance the Comprehensive Disaster Management.

The winning poster will be displayed at the conference venue. The contents
of the poster should be a case–study on how space–based information or
technology was used in the Caribbean (countries or region) in terms of
disaster management. The competition entries
should be in English but are open to all candidates whose first language is
not English. The full judging criteria can be found on
www.spacegeneration.org/spider and in the attached Announcement.

Deadline is 15 November 2009 and entries compatible with the set criteria
should be submitted to spider at spacegeneration.org
